ATTEMPT AT USE OF PERFORMANCE STABILITY CONCEPTION TESTS TO DIAGNOSIS MUSCULAR SYSTEM CONNECTIONS AS ILLUSTRATED WITH THE EXAMPLE OF PROFESSIONAL KAYAKERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 3

Abstract

Research has been undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Performance Stability Tests as a tool for estimation of the degree of exposure of kayak competitors’ biokinematics chain to dysfunction and, by extension, to sport injuries. Two hypothesis were put forward: 1. There are no weak connections in biokinematics chain in kayakers. 2. Kayakers do not suffer from Low Back Pain symptom. LBP when experienced by canoeists is the result of asymmetric paddling technique.Nine polish national team kayak marathon competitors were tested (2 women and 7 men – 4 kayakers and 5 canoeists). Performance Stability Conception Tests were used to evaluate the presence of motor system weak connections – five low activity threshold and 5 high activity threshold were used. Tested competitors also had to rate the pain experienced in a lumbar part of the spine, according to a numerical evaluation scale.Existence of weak motor system links, at different localization, was confirmed in all the tested competitors. Weak motor connections occurred in all segments of the spine, in the shoulder-scapula joints as well as knee joints. Two players suffered from LBP.Conception Performance Stability Tests are available and successful tool to asses weak motor system connections. Early diagnose of this problem combined with use of appropriate training methods may prevent emergence of motor system injuries in the trunk and distal joints, and can increase training efficiency.
