ASSESSMENT OF RESULTS OF KNEE PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER ARTHROSCOPIC TREATMENT
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of comprehensive treatment of knee joint as well as of usefulness of applying surgical treatment and rehabilitation over 20 years after the injury. Rehabilitation methods applied were a combination of conventional physiotherapy and elements of manual therapy.Material and methods. A 37-year-old man who sustained open comminuted fractures of distal femur, proximal tibia and patella 20 years before. Preliminary measurements round the thigh, took 3,10 and 20 cm from the base of patella, revealed a substantial muscle atrophy. The differences in perimeters of his thighs were 0,5, 2,5 and 4 cm respectively. The range of motion of the knee joint was 87° (bent) and there was a shortfall of about 15° to fully stretch the leg.Results. The range of motion increased to 130° reaching a greater range than it was expected. Perimeters of both thighs at each level increased by 0,5 cm.Conclusions. The applied treatment which included arthroscopic techniques brought positive effects. The achieved results show that at each stage, even many years after original treatment, it is justified to make every attempt and effort to improve the quality of the patient's life. In physiotherapy it is beneficial to flexibly combine several methods the therapist is well acquainted with. In case of arthroscopic treatment, pre-operative exercises are an important element of therapy. It is even more advisable in operational treatment carried out in several stages. In complex cases the achieved results depend not only on good co-operation of the doctor, the physiotherapist and the patient but also on comprehensive and harmonious planning out the treatment.
