Avatar therapy : A New Approach to Treat Auditory Hallucinations.
Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2014, Vol 21, Issue 1
Abstract
About one third of patients with schizophrenia continue to experience hallucinations and delusions despite treatment with antipsychotic medication. Patients are often advised by professionals to ignore the voices and not to engage with them. However, encouraging patients to enter into a dialogue with their voices has proved to be therapeutic. 'Avatar Therapy', a computer• assisted intervention for auditory hallucinations, is a novel approach. Patients are invited to create an external representation of their dominant voice hallucination using computer speech technology. The therapist then conducts a dialozue between the avatar and the patient, with a view to gradually bringing the avatar, and ultimately the hallucinatory voice, under the patient's control. It is conducted as a brief intervention conducted weekly, not more effectiveness of the Avatar Therapy, based on the available literature.
