Awareness among the Warmińsko-Mazurskie communities of forestry and forester’s role in management of forest ecosystems
Journal Title: Forestry Letters - Year 2016, Vol 109, Issue
Abstract
The problem of the state of awareness among the communities inhabiting the Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship about the forestry and foresters’ role in management of forest ecosystems was discussed in the presented paper. The papers aims to determine the level of knowledge and indicate potential problems resulting from a lack of awareness about the functioning of natural and forest ecosystems. The research was to verify three suggested hypotheses: 1. a forester job is considered easy and safe, 2. a forester job is associated mainly with hunting and game management, 3. Due to low level of society’s knowledge about forest ecosystems functioning it is necessary to intensify activities of nature and forest education. The research material was obtained by means of survey conducted among 720 people – mainly pupils of upper primary schools, who constituted almost 80% of the surveyed. The survey questionnaire was composed of 18 questions, including 16 closed ones. Systematically carried monitoring of the state of knowledge among the society by means of e.g. survey studies to determine the efficiency of applied measures in the area of nature and forest education will make possible upgrading of the education process and therefore its effectiveness.
