AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PCOS- A REVIEW

Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 7

Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is of clinical and public health importance as it is very common, affecting up to one in five women of reproductive age. It has significant and diverse clinical implications including reproductive (infertility, hyperandrogenism, hirsutism), metabolic (insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Therapy should focus on both the short and long-term reproductive, metabolic and psychological features. Given the etiological role of insulin resistance and the impact of obesity on both hyperinsulinaemia and hyperandrogenism, multidisciplinary lifestyle improvement aimed at normalizing insulin resistance, improving androgen status and aiding weight management is recognized as a crucial initial treatment strategy. In Ayurveda, Pushpagni jataharini mentioned in kasyapa samhitha presents a clinical picture somewhat similar to that of PCOS. This review addresses current knowledge and Ayurvedic perspectives of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and recommends adoption of an Ayurvedic treatment, good lifestyle along with Yoga. Treatment modalities aim at alleviating srotoavarodha and ultimately regularizing the apana vata.
