Journal Title: Türk Dünyası Dil ve Edebiyat Dergisi - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 51
Abstract
There are various markers of modality in the language, which is defined as modality in Turkey Turkish. Modality markers, which are linguistic expressions of modality, are classified into toning, connection, morphological and lexical categories. However, the grammatical category that directly assumes this task in Azerbaijani Turkish is modal words. The main task of modal words is to express modality in various ways. Modal words, with their lexical, grammatical, morphological characters and syntactic functions, also appear as a distinct type of word in Azerbaijani Turkish. Modal words are examined under two headings as fixed modal words (those used only as modal words) and non-fixed modal words (using other types of words as modal words). Modal words are classified in various ways according to their meanings as: (1) modal words expressing approval; (2) modal words expressing possibility, suspicion and hesitation; (3) modal words expressing analogy and comparison; (4) modal words stating conclusion, sequence, and generalization; (5) modal words indicating reference and (6) modal words indicating regret. According to their structure, modal words are considered as simple, derived and compound modal words. Although modal words are examined in morphology in Azerbaijani Turkish, they are also mentioned in syntax due to their function in sentences. Modal words are used in syntax generally as intermediate words, and sometimes in word-sentence task. In Azerbaijani Turkish, modality is studied not only in grammatical category, but also in philosophical-logical category. In this study, information will be given about modal words in Azerbaijani Turkish and their syntax functions will be explained through examples selected from texts.
