Basic aspects of somatic embryogenesis

Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2003, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

In the present work, a clear and accessible way for the reader is conceptually described a series of recognized events that occur during the development of the somatic embryogenesis process. One of the outstanding characteristics of somatic embryos is that they arise from somatic cells and therefore they have the potential to produce duplicates of a specific genotype. This feature not only does it allow clonal propagation, both in vegetatively propagated species and by seeds; but also the multiplication of somatic cells to which specific genes have been introduced by genetic engineering. Genetically modified individuals can be multiplied safely and efficient, avoiding the risks of the incorporation of meiotically unstable foreign genes in the rest germplasm. Plant propagation, through somatic embryogenesis, represents the method most efficient clonal multiplication of plants that has been developed to date. Embryogenesis Somatic as a plant regeneration system has been used for the propagation of plants and as a tool for the conservation and genetic improvement of germplasms. However, its employment for commercial propagation is still scarce. A possible explanation of this phenomenon at the level is related, firstly, to the lack of knowledge that still exists about the biology of the somatic embryogenesis process, coupled with the unavailability of efficient and repeatable systems of regeneration.
