Basics of sample size calculation

Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 1

Abstract

Research questions about population of interest are answered by conducting studies on a sample taken from population. Recruitment of sufficient number of subjects in the sample is essential to ensure that the study is done within ethically, logistically, financially and statistically valid framework. Calculation of an appropriate sample size for a study is determined by alpha or type 1 error, beta or type 2 error (power of study), incidence/prevalence of the health condition, variability of the health condition and expected effect of the intervention. This review describes the sample size calculation in two common scenarios in which either means or proportions in two groups are being compared.
