Abstract

An integral part of the burial ceremony of most of the old societies, including the late sarmatian, is the funeral suit. Because of the actions of robbers, rodents, and natural destruction, scientists studying ancient costumes fall mainly into metal jewelry and accessories, as well as beads. The study of the location of the latter in relation to the parts of the skeleton of the buried can reveal their place in the funeral suit, and the study of the colors of the beads reveal the color compositions of the components of the costume and make a general idea of the aesthetic representations and norms of ancient societies. Schemes of the location of the beads in relation to the parts of the skeleton distinguish groups of burials in which the beads are found: in the neck; in the neck, legs and bracelets; only in bracelets; in the area of the neck and legs; only in the area of the feet. The most widespread pattern was the location of beads in the neck, less commonplace – the location of beads in the legs. But those that occur rarely are patterns of arrangement of beads in the composition of bracelets. The study of the temporal and spatial distribution of individual colors of beads does not reveal the patterns of their propagation. Analysis of the totality of colors of beads in individual burials, on the contrary, is informative. The calculation of different colored beads that were found in the neck region revealed four groups of compositions: monochrome, bicolour, trichromatic, multicolor. And in the area of the legs - three compositions: monochrome, trichromatic, multicolor. The study of the interconnection of materials, colors and shapes of beads in various graves shows the individual character of compositions of beads originating from women’s late sarmatian burials.
