Bed Shear Stress around a Slender Obstruction in Different Channel Section
Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
Study of shear stress in bed channel may be considered as prerequisite for study of sediment transportation, as sediment transports due to shear stress which acts because of fluid flowing above it. Shear stress in bed and cylinder due to fluid flow around a vertical cylinder placed in non-erodible bed is numerically analyzed using k- ϵ model. In the present study, three types of channel section is considered; rectangular, trapezoidal and s-shape channel section. A cylindrical pier is placed in the mid- section of the channel and bed shear is found for different aspect ratio of pier diameter and channel section with different mean flow velocity. Square relation between maximum shear stress and mean velocity was observed. For low flow velocities and large channel aspect ratio, shear stress is found to be independent of cross section of the channel, width of the channel and shape of the channel.

Effect of Abutment Shape on Bed Changes by the Means of Physical Model
Scour is a natural phenomenon which is caused by the water flow of rivers or floods; and it leads to erosion by the means of water flow. It erodes and transfers particles from the bed, banks and around the bridge pier...
