Experimental Study of the Shear Stress Effect on the Deposition Process of the Cohesive Sediments

Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 4

Abstract

Describing the behavior of cohesive sediments is so complicated; and the flocculation of these sediments increases the amount of sedimentation.Cohesive sediments are characterized as a mixture of predominantly clay and siltsizedfractions of clay-type minerals but may also contain a range of organic compounds. This study has been done in a circular flume located atShahrekord University’s hydraulic laboratory. The experiments were conducted for three initial concentration levels and five different shear stresses and in the experiments the flowvelocity and shear stress were measured by the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter(ADV). The experiments have been continued for 4 hours. The results showed that during the time tests, the concentration of the suspended sediments reached to a constant equilibrium value only for experiments with higher shear stress. It was also observed that reaching to equilibrium concentration takes less time in larger stresses. This showed that the flow’s shear stress may be had an important role in the flocculation process.
