Investigation of the capability of a Numerical model to simulate a Mining Pit in River Bed
Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Rivers are the most essential source of aggregates for civil works such as construction of roads, canals, concrete buildings and many other construction purposes. However, the improper mining of sand and gravel from bed rivers may cause significant damage to them in terms of mass bank failure, channel bed erosion. In this research, because of the widespread use of numerical models in different types of hydraulic problems, the variation of the packed bed river profile due to digging a trapezoidal pit in the bed river is analyzed by a leading numerical model. the simulation data is compared with the measured value and the result is discussed and the reason why the numerical model was almost unsuccessful to simulate this phenomenon is discussed. The objective of this research is to investigate limitation of a particular CFD model by comparison of its results with the experimental data. finally other related numerical models is introduced and.

Bed Shear Stress around a Slender Obstruction in Different Channel Section
Study of shear stress in bed channel may be considered as prerequisite for study of sediment transportation, as sediment transports due to shear stress which acts because of fluid flowing above it. Shear stress in bed...
Assessment and Quality Classification of Water in Karun, Dez and Karkheh Rivers
Rivers are assumed as one of the most important sources of water supply for agricultural, drinking and industrial uses. With this regard, quality evaluation of these sources is one of the main duties in the field of e...
3D Simulation of Flow over a Triangular Broad-Crested Weir
On natural streams where it is necessary to measure wide range of discharges, a triangular control has several advantages. Firstly, it provides a large breadth at high flows, so that the backwater effect is not excessive...
Importance of Flood Severity Estimation for Flood Plain Management in a River Valley
Climate changes strongly affect the occurrence of floods. Extreme flooding can occur due to dam failure but sometimes high outflows that exceed the downstream safe channel capacity can also cause significant flooding....
Delineation of Possible Extent of Flooding in Creeks by HEC-GEORAS
This research emphasizes the estimation of overbank flooding in creeks and delineation of the extent of flooding in GIS format. For the purpose, a very versatile tool HECGeoRAS has been utilized with the combination of...
