Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42

Abstract

Mankind, while defining itself in social sphere, constantly takes into consideration the different ones from itself. The others are taken as a reference when politic view, sexuality, belief and values are defined. These relations with the people not like our own or “others”, brings othering process together. People who have different political views, sexual orientations and beliefs or from different nationalities are easily otherized. Othering actually also a way to maintain social power. Discursive practices that exist within social relations from this perspective can become an important tool of othering. Media reproduces and reinforces existing discursive practices in society. In other words, media can systematically otherize the people who are already perceived as the other, with its discourses. Especially when it’s about the local media this mechanism can work even more powerful. In this paper, it’s analysed how Syrian refugees, who have been increasingly becoming a social, political, cultural and economic conflict issue since 2011 to now in Turkey, are otherized by the discourses built in local newspapers’ news. Critical discourse analysis is used on the examined newspaper’ news. As a result of this paper, it’s achieved that the Syrian refugees are otherized in news’ discourses as unwanted others in social, cultural and economic meaning.
