Beneficial Effects of Japanese Sake Yeast Supplement on Depressive-Like Behaviors in a Rat Model of Global Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion
Journal Title: The 1st Annual Meeting of Georgian Center for Neuroscience Research - Year 2020, Vol 2, Issue 20
Abstract
Background: Stroke is known to be one of the most frequent causes of mortality, responsible for high rates of death and disability around the world. Antioxidant agents can reduce ischemic nerve damage by eliminating free radicals. On the search for non-pharmacological compounds, Japanese sake yeast is considered as a novel and natural agent with potent antioxidant properties. In this study for the first time, we investigate the effects of Japanese sake yeast supplement on depressive-like behaviors in a rat model of global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. Methods: rats were divided into 4 groups: control group; was not subjected to bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) and don’t received sake yeast supplement. Ischemia group was induced by BCCAO for 10 min followed by reperfusion without sake yeast supplement. Ischemia + sake 25 group and Ischemia + sake 50 groups were treated with sake yeast supplement for 30 days. 24 hours after subjected to BCCAO, tail suspension test was used to evaluate depressive-like behavior. Results: Our preliminary findings showed that a significant increase and decrease in the immobility and climbing times in I/R damage group compared with the control group (p<0.01) while the treated groups with the sake yeast 25mg/kg (p<0.05) and 50mg/kg (p<0.001) reversed depression-like behaviors compared to control group. Conclusion: The findings of the present study demonstrate that sake yeast supplement may be ameliorated depressive-like behavior induced by global ischemia in the rat model.
