Bible and the problem of eschatological consciousness in the Russian artistic epos

Abstract
The article deals with the problem of eschatological consciousness in the Russian novel-epopee (L. Tolstoy and D. Merezhkovsky), which was determined by the biblical concept of metahistory and Eternity. It is emphasized that these works are much less obliged to the traditions of the classical verse epic than to the prosaic biblical chronicles of the debrimhayamym (the work of the days) and are based not so much on Aristotle’s poetics and the principle of “restoring the disturbed world order” (Hegel) as on the ideological and aesthetic concept of the Bible, affirming the frailty of “temporary years” and the inevitability of the Last Judgment.
