Biodiesel nitrogen oxides emissions

Abstract

The trend of using the alternative fuels is increasing because of the global warming. For example, biodiesel improves the balance of carbon dioxide on the planet and reduces soot emissions compared with diesel fuel. But using the biodiesel in internal combustion engines tends to show higher nitrogen oxides emissions compared with diesel. The equations for the formation of nitrogen oxides, mainly through three mechanisms (thermal, prompt and nitrous oxide) are presented in this work. The characteristic coefficients of the process kinetics for diesel and biodiesel fuels are also given. Nitrogen oxides emissions of biodiesel fuels, made from soybean oil, tallow oil and used oil, are analysed in the paper. The dependence of nitrogen oxides emissions on the degree of unsaturation of molecules is shown. Biodiesel based on soybean oil showed more nitrogen oxides emissions during the combustion, since it contains more unsaturated molecules (double-bonded molecules). Nitrogen oxide emissions can be reduced by exhaust gas recirculation. The empirical formula for the nitrogen oxides emissions of diesel and biodiesel blends is obtained, which gives a good agreement with the experimental data for low-temperature combustion in the case of exhaust gas recirculation.
