Biofilm in orthodontics.Part 2. Oral cavity hygiene in the course of orthodontic treatment

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 2

Abstract

An improvement in the aesthetics of the smile is the main reason for which most patients initiate orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic therapy with the use of fixed orthodontic appliances is effective but due to difficulty maintaining correct oral cavity hygiene during treatment, such fixed appliances are deemed to be a factor predisposing to initiation or intensification of the caries process. It is a duty of an orthodontist to make the patient aware what appropriate oral hygiene principles should be maintained during orthodontic treatment. The objective of this study was to present caries prevention principles both prior to and during therapy with the use of a fixed orthodontic appliance. (Kozak U, Dunin-Wilczyńska I.
