Biomarkers of Bone Resorption and Progression of Bony Changes in Leprosy
Journal Title: Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 0
Abstract
Leprosy is one of the world oldest diseases and been discriminated due to the hideous deformities, and it continues to be a health problem due to its ability to cause permanent deformities. Bone resorption (BP) is one of the disease processes in leprosy and occurs in the early stage of the disease. at is why BP markers must be a principle prognostic factors in leprosy. Outcomes of several studies show that there was a significant increase of urinary calcium and creatinine as well as serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in cases of leprosy. e urinary calcium excretion associated with serum creatinine marked as a marker of BP as well as serum ALP activity is marked as a bone formation marker. In this review, we correlated bone biomarkers with the progression of BP.
