Biopsy in the diagnostics of oral diseases– review of literature
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 12
Abstract
Introduction: Every dentist should be aware of possible occurrence of potentially malignant oral lesions, and within the oral mucosa in particular. Appropriate treatment is possible only after accurate diagnosis. Even though detailed interview with the patient, exact manual examination, and precise visualization provide useful information, it is often necessary to verify the oral lesion in question histopathologically.Aim of the study: To present types of biopsy, biopsy sampling techniques, clinical indications and the protocol for sample material fixationandtransportation. Conclusions: Diagnostics and treatment of oral lesions is based on the outcome of histopathological examination. It is, therefore, necessary for the dentist to provide the pathologist with the tissue material of the highest quality which was obtained following a properly performed biopsy.
