BODY STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION OF SHORT DISTANCE RUNNERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. Nowadays it is claimed that each sport requires a specific predisposition related to the build and composition of the body. The aim of the study was to investigate the body structure and composition of sprinters practicing different sport categories and to establish differences in the types of body structure between the national team athletes and sportsmen from Bydgoszcz sports clubs.Material and methods. 21 sprinters on the distance 100 and 200 meters (13 from Bydgoszcz sports clubs and 8 from the national team) aged 17 to 21 were studied. The somatotype of the studied sportsmen was determined according to Sheldon's typology in the Heath-Carter modification. The body composition was investigated with segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (SBIA).Results. Both groups of sprinters are characterized by similar values of body height and mass well as weight-for-height indices. The mean somatotype for the national team sprinters was: 2.6-4.0-2,7. In the group of Bydgoszcz sprinters, the components assumed values of: 2.1-4.0-2.7, respectively. The sprinters were also characterized by similar body composition.Conclusions. The national team sprinters and the runners from Bydgoszcz clubs were characterized by similar morphological traits. As regards body structure, the mesomorphic type was dominating in both groups. The national team sprinters had higher endomorphy value. The minimal differences in body composition shows the similar level of training in both groups.
