Abstract
Le court règne de Sigismond III Vasa en Suède (de 1587, roi de la Pologne et Grand Duc de Lituanie) et son détrônement menèrent à l’éclatement de la guerre polonaise-suédoise en 1600. Par l’inclusion de l’Estonie suédoise dans le territoire de l’Union litua-nienne-polonaise, le roi polonais transforma le conflit dynastique de l’intérieur de la fa-mille de Vasa (Wasa) dans une guerre de longue durée entre les deux pays. La Livonie de-vint le champ de bataille. L’armée polonaise, manquée de flotte, aussi, dut défendre la pro-vince des nombreuses invasions du roi suédois, Charles IX. Le but de l’armée suédoise fut de profiter des villes fortifiées, spécialement de celui plus grand et plus riche : Riga. Pendant la première phase de la guerre, qui débuta en 1611, les attaques furent manqués de succès grâce au courage des citoyens et aux victoires habituelles de l’armée polonaise-lituanienne dans les luttes du champ ouvert. Malgré cela, l’Union ne réussit pas à gagner la guerre et en 1617, le nouveau roi, Gustavus Adolphus de Suède, recommença les luttes.
