Bolesław Prus w zwierciadle „Roli” Jana Jeleńskiego

Abstract

The article discusses the attitude of the Warsaw-based “Rola” weekly towards Boleslaw Prus. The journalists of “Rola” perceived Prus as a talented belletrist, although they criticised his journalistic work. They emphasised his journalistic shortcomings in terms of skill and his dependency on Jewish financial support, which they claimed made it impossible for him to remain objective. On the one hand the conservative “Rola” was oversensitive towards any of criticism Prus made against of Polish nobility and landowners. On the other hand, it dismissed the assimilation program directed at Polish Jews which the writer supported. The assessment of Prus changed only after his death, when “Rola” pointed out the ideological transformation in Prus, who gave up the hopes for assimilation and even drifted towards anti-semitism.
