Abstract

Bolesław Marian Zimmer was one of the distinguished teachers from Lublin in the past century. He was born on 6 February 1914 in Majdan Stary (Ukraine). He graduated Pedagogy and then History at the Catholic University of Lublin where in 1946 he earned his PhD in Pedagogy. All of his life he was simultaneously devoted to teaching, scout work and discovering the past of the Chełm region. During the German occupation he worked as a teacher for the Secret Teaching Organization (the Polish abbreviation is TON). After the war he continued working as a teacher and later became a headmaster at General K. Świerczewski Secondary School for Working People. Between 1935 and 1992 he held important positions within in the Scout leadership. He was an active member of the teachers’ movement and acted as a deputy chairman of the Club for former teachers of the Secret Teaching Organization at the County Board of Polish Teachers’ Union in Lublin. Zimmer published six books, including ‘The city of Chełm. A historical overview’ (1974), ‘The Scouting Movement of the Lublin region. A historical overview 1911-1950’ (1987). Under his scientific editorship three collective works on secondary education in Lublin were also published. He died on 11 January 2002 in Lublin and was buried in the Old Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.
