Abstract

Józef Madeja was born in Opole on 5 April 1899. He attended and completed elementary and Realschule in Opole, and the teacher’s college in Pyskowice near Gliwice. He began his first professional work in 1919, having obtained the post of a teacher at a German primary school near Opole. Following the split of Upper Silesia, J. Madeja – who declared to be Polish – came to live in Katowice in 1921. He worked as a teacher at primary schools based in the Polish part of Upper Silesia. He studied pedagogy at the Jagiellonian University, where he prepared his doctoral dissertation in the field of psychology. He also worked as a teacher in teachers’ seminaries and at the Pedagogical Institute in Katowice. From 1956 he was employed at the Teacher’s Training College of Opole, where he stayed until his retirement in 1970. During that time he published over 50 scientific works, chiefly in the field of history of education. The majority of them dealt with Upper Silesia and showed the history of the Region as an integral part of the past of the Polish nation, as well as its close relation to other regions. J. Madeja was the first native person of Opole, who was made a Polish professor.
