Abstract
Praga district of Warsaw suffered significant material losses during the World War I. Its population, believing that Poland would soon regain independence, took up proactive efforts to return to normality while the war was still on. This involved helping the poor and the in-jured, creating educational centres for both the children and the adults, taking care of the needy. Such spontaneous action was undertaken not only by the Praga Civic Committee but also by the Polish Educational Society. The latter started a network of reading rooms and libraries in Praga, having further plans to open nurseries, schools and other educational es-tablishments. The Society supplemented its meagre finances by organising ad hoc events with the profits going towards the educational goals.
