BOOKPLATES IN ROMUALD HUBE COLLECTION IN THE STACKS OF THE SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY OF THE ODESSA MECHNIKOV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Abstract

In 1868 Novorossiysky University acquired a valuable library of a Polish jurist and expert of sources of law Romuald Hube (1803-1890), which contained mainly legal texts, starting with old sources of law, commentaries on the reprinted codes executed in the 16th -19th centuries as well as special studies (8100 volumes). Copies of the publications of the 15th-16th centuries coming from this “dispersed” collection are described in the catalogues and introduced into scientific discourse, certain thematic blocks of the collection being studied as well. However, the bookplates that mark the copies collected by the Polish scientist, have only recently become the object of investigation. 21 bookmarks are briefly described in the album-catalog “Bookplates of European bibliophiles in the University Library collections” (Odessa, 2017). General viewing of an old-printed part of the collection resulted in having revealed another 12 super-ex-librises, 50 ex-libris (labels), 30 imprints of stamps and more than 300 owners’ records to be attributed, fixed and studied. These bibliographic data have yet to be processed and put into scientific circulation. The paper presents information on one type of bookmarks – labels (ex-libris) including 24 heraldic ex-libris, 21 typographic and 2 genre ones, all of them pasted on the back of the upper cover of bindings, fly-sheets of books or on the back of title pages. We managed to attribute forty-four bookplates of fifty ones: 38 ex-libris belonged to private bibliophiles and 6 – to collections of institutions. The names of the owners of books from the collection of R. Hube as well as dates of life, their status and occupation, are recorded in Appendix 1. Appendix 2 presents descriptions of the bookplates whose owners have not been attributed. This information will be added to the general database “Bookmarks in the Collections of the Scientific Library of the Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University”.
