Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2008, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

This text is aimed at discussing the administration and the legal regime of the Brazilian port in the nineteenth century, parallel to the formation process of a broken up national port system. The text presents the performance of the agencies that were responsible for the policies of improvement and security of the Brazilian ports, starting with the Intendancy Navy Arsenal (1822-1845), following with the Port Captaincy (1845-1873/1890) and with the Inspection of the Maritime Ports (1890-1903). The text also discusses the constant attempts to implement improvement policies in the Brazilian ports; some were successful, some others failed.
