Abstract
Abstract The Bretton Woods system was a monetary management system established in 1944, in the aftermath of World War II. Under the Bretton Woods system, other countries could exchange their dollars for gold at a fixed rate, but only the US could do so freely. This led to imbalances in the global economy, as the US ran large trade deficits while other countries accumulated large amounts of dollars. The system began to break down in the 1960s, as the US ran out of gold reserves to back its currency and the dollar was devalued. In 1971, President Richard Nixon ended the convertibility of the dollar to gold, effectively ending the Bretton Woods system. Despite its eventual collapse, the Bretton Woods system had a significant impact on the global economy and international finance. It helped to promote economic growth and stability in the post-war period and established the US dollar as the dominant global currency.
