Building Scientific Capability: Understanding Science Teachers' Experiences and Perceptions in Using DepEd Science Equipment
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2024, Vol 16, Issue 4
Abstract
This study explored the experiences and perceptions of elementary science teachers at Sta. Cruz Elementary School regarding the utilization of Department of Education (DepEd) science laboratory equipment. The research aims to explore teachers' encounters, identify influencing factors on competence, examine challenges faced, and determine training and support needs for enhancing proficiency in equipment use. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach with purposive sampling, the study engaged 20 science teachers through a Google Forms survey. Thematic analysis, utilizing QDA Miner Light software, was employed to discern recurring themes and patterns in the collected data. The findings revealed multifaceted knowledge and skill areas essential for effective utilization of DepEd Science Laboratory Equipment, encompassing teaching enhancement, financial constraints, safety integration, curriculum alignment, and continuous professional development. Identified skill areas include adaptation to remote and online learning, diversity and inclusivity in teaching, safety integration and communication, continuous professional development, and efficient equipment management. Challenges faced include safety concerns, equal access to technology, adaptation to remote learning, time constraints, and the prioritization of professional development. In response to these findings, the study advocates for focused professional development initiatives, inclusive proficiencies, provisions for assistance, thorough training programs, collaboration, resource advocacy, and ongoing assessment and enhancement. These recommendations aim to address knowledge gaps, enhance adaptability, provide support for challenges, and foster a collaborative environment among science educators. Implementing these suggestions can empower policymakers and educational institutions to create an environment conducive to effective utilization of DepEd Science Laboratory Equipment, ultimately improving the quality of science instruction.
