Burden of Depression : a clinical review of current concerns.

Abstract

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder associated with considerable disability, higher suicide rate and poor quality of life. It affects prognosis of comorbid conditions and increases mortality.It is well known that compared of these, a considerable proportion of depression remains undiagnosed and untreated for various reasons. There are also issues related to its diagnostic reliability, effectiveness of available treatment and inadequate information on various aspects of management. The article highlights the clinical issues surrounding prevalence, diagnosis and management challenges of depression and summarises the research needs.
