SPIRITUALITY AND MENTAL HEALTH

Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2011, Vol 18, Issue 1

Abstract

For the medical fraternity it is a common experience to see that the response to same treatment for the same illness is different in different individual. The psychological makeup and the approach to life of an individual, which is unique for everyone, are thought to be the reasons behind this difference. Those, who are more religions or spiritual, and use their spirituality to cope with life, experience many benefits to their health and well-being. Prayer and spirituality have been linked to: Better health, less hypertension, less stress, more positive feelings, and greater psychological well-being. The role of spirituality for finding meaning and hope in suffering has also been identified in the process of psychological recovery. ReIigious involvement and spirituality are found to be associated withbetter health outcomes, including greater longevity, coping skills and health-related quality of life (even during terminal illness) and less anxiety, depression and suicide. Several studies have shown that addressing the spiritual needs of the patient may enhance recovery from illness (Mueller, et af. 2001). But the spiritual domain is often neglected in the healthcare.
