Calcium as therapeutic agent in osteoporosis

Journal Title: Revista Cuarzo - Year 2016, Vol 22, Issue 2

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease that produces a quantitati-vely defi cient, poor-quality, fracture-prone bone that is treated with calcium. Although the benefi cial effects of this element are known, recent reports associate it with cardiovascular complications. Taking into account the above, this review sought to capture the state of the art and the latest concepts on the use of calcium in osteoporosis as well as to establish if the cardiovascular risk attri-buted to this agent is real. We particularly think that the benefi ts of calcium as a therapeutic element for the adjunctive treatment of osteoporosis exceed the potential deleterious effects attributed to it. And probably the alleged risk of cardiovascular disease induced by calcium is a false alarm and becomes another of the frequent myths postulated in medicine. It can be concluded that the role of calcium as a mineral element is very important for bone tissue, although it is true that these agents are being questioned in some respects as cardiovascular safety among others, defi nitely both calcium and vitamin D are not the More potent elements in the therapeutic arsenal against the disease, but their defi cits are the simplest to identify and the easiest to correct.
