Journal Title: Advance Research Journal of Multidisciplinary Discoveries - Year 2018, Vol 27, Issue 27

Abstract

Panax quinquefolius has been used for centuries by native Amerindians and in Traditional Chinese medicine, due to its several beneficial and healing properties. In traditional medicine, it is considered to be complementary with the Chinese ginseng, P. ginseng: P. quinquefolius is a yang tonic, that has cooling effect and promotes respiratory and digestive health; whereas P. ginseng is a yin tonic that has a warming effect, and promotes a healthy circulatory system. These activities are reported to be coming from a group of actives molecules specific to the Panax genus, some triterpenoid saponins called ginsenosides. Many studies reported the pharmacological activities of P. quinquefolius and its ginsenosides, including anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardio-protective and immunomodulatory properties.
