Cardiometabolic Profile Status in Diabetic Children and Adolescents
Journal Title: Scholars Journal of Applied Medical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 10
Abstract
Abstract: Assessment of cardiometabolic profile in children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a serious concern and a matter of interest for researchers. However, limited studies have been documented on abnormality in glycemic and lipid profile in young diabetic patients. The objective of present study was to determine the glycemic and lipid profile in children and adolescents with T2DM and to determine their role in disease complexity. Fasting blood glucose levels, glycosylated hemoglobin along with serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL and VLDL levels were estimated by using standard methods in 26 children of either sex (08-18 years age group) suffering from T2DM (Group II) and in 26 normal healthy individuals, served as healthy controls (Group I). The observed values were expressed as Mean ± SD and data from patients and controls were compared using students‘t’ test. Fasting blood glucose, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL levels were significantly high (p<0.05) and serum HDL levels were significantly low (p<0.05) in T2DM patients as compared to healthy controls. Similarly, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was also found towards the higher end of the normal range in Group II subjects. These finding suggest that diabetic children and adolescents are at enhanced risk to develop cardiovascular complication due to their altered glycemic and lipid profile with respect to non-diabetic controls. Therefore, control on blood sugar level and maintenance of normal lipid profile along with regular monitoring of cardiac markers in Indian children can prove to be protective against cardiovascular complications in early stage of life.
