CARICATURES ON THE PAGES OF THE MAGAZINE ‘INZHENERNYI TRUD’ (1924–1935): TYPES, FUNCTIONS, CONTENT

Journal Title: Історичний архів. Наукові студії - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 19

Abstract

The article deals with a complex of caricatures from the magazine ‘Inzhenernyi Trud’ (1924–1935). The analysis of the complex is carried out on three levels: syntactic (the place of caricatures in the visual and verbal field of the maga-zine), pragmatic (functional purpose of caricatures) and semantic (their symbolic component, sense load). Complex analysis of the periodical ‘Inzhenernyi Trud’has proved an important place of caricatures in the verbal and visual content of the magazine and demonstrated the connection of various types of illustrations not only with the general policy of the magazine, but also with the policy of the Soviet state as a whole. It is no coincidence that the vast majority of the caricatures falls on the period of the ‘cultural revolution’, which was directed against the old technical intelligentsia. Among the caricatures, which were published on the pages of the magazine, the social and political ones dominated, while the humorous did not gain a wide distribution. Besides, in this case, social caricatures often acquired a political character. Engineers were the main characters of the caricatures in the magazine, whose images had only a negative connotation (‘Strangers’, ‘Enemies’), which was created with the help of appropriate symbols – uniforms. Functionally, caricatures, above all, acted as ‘sharp weapons’ directed against the enemies of the Soviet power. In addition, we can talk about their educational (the formation of a new Soviet engineer), informational (complementing and strengthening the content of the verbal part of the text), aesthetic (improving the appearance of the magazine), commercial (increasing the number of subscribers) and communicative functions.
