Catullus’ Poetry: Roman inheritance and poet’s innovations.

Abstract

The article is focused on the study of Catullus’ poetry as a synthesis of Roman inheritance, being a combination of Greek literary discoveries and Roman writers’ innovations as well as innovative implementations of the poet himself. A comprehensive analysis of Catullus’ works combined with the study of socio-historical, lingual-and-cultural as well as aesthetic-and-philosophical factors that contributed to their writing, makes it possible to advance a deeper understanding of ideological, aesthetic and worldviews search of the lyrical poet within the context of the Roman literature development. Literary findings and innovations introduced by Catullus comprise the expansion of genres (epithalamia, epillions, epigrams) and sizes, some of which were introduced by the author into the Roman literature for the first time (hexameter, Phallec poem, elegiac distichous, Sapphic stanza, pure iambic trimeter, great asclepiad’s poem, Haliiambus) and some of which were restricted in use (spondee, pentameters). The paper outlines the fact that the initiated by Catullus themes of love and of the character’s inner world depicted through his/her private life which until then had not been exposed by Roman artists, were of great significance for the Roman literature. While writing his poetry Catullus followed the traditions of the Latin poetic language of the Ist century BC and at the same time enriched it with his own poetic inventions. The poet’s expressive means are quite diverse and, functioning on different language levels, combine lyricism and sarcasm, expressiveness and serenity, national character and high style.
