CERVICAL RIBS AS A CAUSE OF ARTERIAL COMPLICATIONS IN THE THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME - CASE REPORT

Abstract
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a relatively rare cause of pain in the shoulder or even the entire arm. It results from compression of the subclavian or axillary artery, located near the thoracic outlet. The vascular form of this syndrome is relatively rare, nevertheless it is very dangerous as, in extreme cases, it can lead to upper limb dysfunction. Each anatomical anomaly of the thoracic outlet can cause TOS. The most typical pathological changes are caused by cervical ribs which interfere with the normal arrangement of internal structures, resulting in numerous neurovascular changes. An accurate history taking and medical examination enable an initial diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome whereas the cause of this syndrome is hard to recognise. The most frequent cause of pain in the upper limb is compression of the brachial plexus, therefore the vascular factor responsible for upper limb dysfunction is frequently neglected. However, a positive result of provocative tests may indicate the vascular nature of the syndrome. In this case, computer tomography is essential to confirm the diagnosis.
