INFLUENCE OF CONTROLLED BREATHING ON THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM ACTIVITY IN YOUNG HEALTHY ATHLETES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 6

Abstract

Background. In order to standardize the methodology of evaluating autonomic nervous system activity it is recommended to record systolic arterial pressure and heart period signals during the regular breathing of the examinee. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of controlled breathing on the autonomic nervous system activity in young professional athletes.Material and methods. Ten healthy athletes aged 17±1 were included into the study. The 10-minute non-invasive beat-to-beat systolic arterial pressure – SAP and heart period – HP registrations were performed during spontaneous (REC) and controlled (RC) breathing (0.23 Hz). The signal of SAP was obtained by a non-invasive beat-to-beat method using FINAPRES (Ohmeda). HP recording was performed using MINGOGRAF 720C. Self-adjustment FINAPRES function was switched off directly before the actual recording and it was switched on again after each recording in order to recalibrate the device. The recorded analogue SAP and HP signals were synchronized and processed by analogue to digital converter with sampling frequency of 250 Hz and transferred to computer with POLYAN software that calculated BRS and HRV indices. HP signal resolution equal to 1 ms was obtained using linear interpolation algorithm. Based on the achieved signals, selected indices of short- term heart rate variability (HRV) (LFnu, HFnu, LF/HF) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS_WBA; 0.04-0.15 Hz) were analysed.Results. During regular breathing the increase in HFnu (REC 50±26 vs RC 76±14 NU, p=0.005), the decrease of LFnu (REC 50±26 vs RC 24±14 NU, p=0.005) and LF/HF (REC 2.7±5.0 vs RC 0.4±0.3, p=0.005) were observed. No changes were noticed in BRS_WBA: REC 15.6±9.2 vs RC 16.4±10.5 ms/mmHg (p=0.8).Conclusions. The controlled breath (0,23 Hz) significantly changes HRV parameters without affecting baroreflex sensitivity in young professional athletes. This may prove to be important when choosing the methodology of evaluating autonomic nervous system activity.
