Abstract
Sedentary life style and not adequate physical activity level of children and adults are among main public health problems in most industrialized countries. International comparative studies revealed that Portugal and Poland are leaders in the European disgraceful ranking of the less physically active nations. According to the study performed by Drygas et al in 90-ties in the frame of the international CINDI WHO Program more than 70% of adult men and women from large urban society are not involved in any regular exercises duration of at least 30 minutes or participate in exercises very rarely. Only 6-10% of adult Polish men and women were classified as highly active individuals. Recently published studies realized in the frame of the CINDI Program in large cities Lodz and Torun and especially the WOBASZ Study a great national representative survey comprising above 14.000 adults aged 18-74 demonstrate that prevalence of individuals with adequate level of regular physical activity is higher that in previous studies but still 50-60% of adult men and women are characterized by sedentary life stile. The author describes main health and economic benefits of physically active life style and presents some ideas and practical examples how to increase physical activity level in Poland.
