CERVICAL SPINEINJURIES

Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 2007, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

The cervical spine is a complex structure located between the head and the torso, which preserves vital neural organs and has a large range of motion. Cervical spine is surrounded by neurovascular structures, airway, upper gastrointestinal tractus and muscles. The cervical spine is evaluated in 2 regions; upper cervical or occipitoatlantoaxial region and lower cervical or subaxial region. The patients with cervical spine injuries are often polytraumatized patients. Injuries to the upper cervical region generally accompany head and craniofacial trauma. Treatment options for the patients with cervical spine injuries should be planned regarding the patient’s neurological status and additional injuries. Aim of the treatment should be the prevention of neurological involvement and restoration of the stability.
