Changes in FNDC5 Expression in Heart Tissue of Old Rats Following a Course of Mandatory Exercise
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 6
Abstract
FNDC5 is a newly discovered factor that is related to energy homeostasis and the incidence of many diseases, especially in the elderly. This study aims at investigating the changes in levels of FNDC5 in heart tissue of old rats after 8 weeks of mandatory swimming program. To this end, fourteen 40-50 weeks old rats with initial mean weight of 250-300g were randomly and equally divided into control and exercise groups. The subjects did 30 minutes mandatory swimming exercise for three times per week in eight weeks. Forty-eight hours after the last exercise session and 10-12 hours of fasting, the rats were anesthetized and their heart tissues were separated and kept at -70?C for FNDC5 measurement. For FNDC5 measurement, Rat FNDC5 ELISA kit and ELISA method were used. Data was analyzed at significance level of 0.05 (p<0.05), using -independent t-test. Results show that eight weeks of mandatory swimming exercise do not significantly increase FNDC5 levels in heart tissue, compared to the control group (p>0.05). In general, results show that eight weeks of mandatory swimming exercise do not significantly increase FNDC5 levels in the heart tissue of old rats, which may be attributed to the type, duration, and intensity of the exercise.
