Characterization of Reproduction of Local Barred Male Chicken of the Western Highlands of Cameroon: Sexual Maturity, Fertility and Sperm Storage Term in Female

Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

This study was conducted to point out some reproductive characteristics in Cameroon local barred rooster such as age at sexual maturity, fertility and sperm storage term in female genital tract. For this purpose, thirty local barred cocks (16 weeks old, mean weight: 1221.2±27.86 g) and 24 local barred female chicken (16 weeks old, mean weight: 1026.1 ±14.23 g) were used. Throughout experiment (20 to 40 weeks old), semen quality and hematological parameters were analyzed at 5 weeks intervals as fertility assessment. At 20, 30 and 40 weeks old, serum levels of testosterone, LH and FSH were determined. Sperm storage term was determined at 30 weeks old. No significant change (P>0.05) was observed during the experimental period for hematocrit and total erythrocyte count although; it increased from week 20 to week 30. Semen volume and sperm concentration significantly increased (P<0.05) from 20 weeks to 30 weeks old and decreased non significantly (P>0.05). Testosterone and LH values increased significantly (P<0.05) from week 20 to 30 and decreased at 40 weeks old. Inversely, FSH decreased significantly (P<0.05) from week 20 to weeks 30 and 40. Fertility rate increased significantly (P<0.05) from 74.77% at 25 weeks old to 85.42% at 30 weeks old. The sperm storage term was around 16 days. It was concluded that local barred male chicken from the western highlands of Cameroon reach full sexual maturity between 25 and 30 weeks old and they have good reproductive ability.
