Estimation of Lipid Profile, Body Fat Percentage, Body Mass Index, Waist to Hip Ratio in Patients with Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 9

Abstract

To compare lipid profile and body composition values like body mass index (BMI), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and body fat percentage (BFP) in hypothyroid, hypothyroid patients and in control group. 105 subjects were divided into three group based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study subjects divided into three groups i.e. normal healthy subjects, hypothyroid patients and hyperthyroid patients. Each group consisted of 35 subjects. Each group was tested for their thyroid profile, lipid profile and body composition values. Thyroid profile including free triiodothyronine (free T3), free thyroxine (free T4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured by using a microplate immunoenzymometric assay method. Lipid profile including serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) were measured by using Phosphotungstate Method. Body compositions including BMI, WHR & BFP was determined by subject’s Anthropometric measurements. The data statistically analyzed by applying unpaired‘t’ test. In case of Lipid Profile, there is a significant (P< 0.05) increase in the serum TC, LDL-C and TG in hypothyroid group as compared to control group but whereas in hyperthyroid group there is significant (P< 0.05) decrease in the TC and LDL-C values as compared to control group. Conversely, the concentration of serum HDL-C in hypothyroid group was increased, whereas the serum TG and HDL-C in hyperthyroid group which were decreased when compared to control group which were also statistically (P< 0.05) insignificant. In case of Body Composition, there is significant (P< 0.05) increase in the values of BMI, WHR and BFP in hypothyroid group, whereas the values of BMI and BFP were significantly decreased in hyperthyroid group as compared to control group. All lipid values were increased with increase in the values of body composition in hypothyroidism which leads to obesity whereas reverse is seen in hyperthyroidism. So there is a definite correlation existed between disordered lipids profile (dyslipidemia) and body composition in thyroid dysfunction. Therefore, patients referred for diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia should be screened for thyroid dysfunction by measurement of TSH values.
