Characterization of Solid Concrete Block Masonry
Journal Title: Mehran University Research Journal of Engineering and Technology - Year 2017, Vol 36, Issue 1
Abstract
Masonry walls constituted of solid concrete blocks are used very commonly in the framed structures as well as in the load bearing structures in various parts of Pakistan. However, very limited understanding on the characteristics and behavior of this type of masonry walls, particularly from the perspective of the seismic design and assessment, is available. This paper attempts to investigate the important characteristics, such as strength and stiffness, of the walls constructed from two grades/types of these blocks, referred as Type-1 and Type-2 blocks. The dimensions of Type-1 and Type-2 blocks are 300x200x150mm and 300x200x100mm, respectively. Compressive strength, bond strength, coefficient of friction, and diagonal (shear)strength of the masonry blocks and its assemblages are obtained from detailed experimental work. In the due course, the influence of the presence of the plaster on the masonry prisms made of two and three blocks subjected to compression and shear force respectively are investigated. The outcomes of the experimental investigation presented herein can be used effectively in macro and micro modelling of infill in framed structures as well as load bearing structures.

Effect of Firing on Cracking and Warping of Clay Beams
Reinforced baked clay beams may be considered to be a substitute of reinforced cement concrete beams in order to build low cost houses. The baking of these clay beams can pose problems such as cracking and warping. This...
A Family of High Continuity Subdivision Schemes Based on Probability Distribution
Subdivision schemes are famous for the generation of smooth curves and surfaces in CAGD (Computer Aided Geometric Design). The continuity is an important property of subdivision schemes. Subdivision schemes having high c...

Solar Thermal Technologies Dynamics and Strategies for Market Creation in Sindh
In order to sketch Sindh?s RE (Renewable Energy) based scenario, it is vital to trace the dynamics of simplest RETs (Renewable Energy Technologies) such as STTs (Solar Thermal Technologies). STTs are simple to operate, e...
Modified NEH Algorithm for Multi-Objective Sequencing in Mixed-Model Assembly Lines
Assembly lines are usually used for the mass production. The dawn of mass customization has forced the industries to shift to MMAL (Mixed-Model Assembly Lines). ALBP (Assembly Line Balancing Problem) and MSP (Model Seque...
