Chemical Assessment of Gaseous Pollutants and Particulate Matters in Air of Chittagong City
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Polluted air is one of the major environmental problems in Bangladesh. It has significant effect on exacerbation of asthma allergy and other respiratory diseases. Automobile exhaust and certain industrial pollutants are responsible for this pollution. Considering the severity of the problem, the current study plan was undertaken to measure the gaseous pollutants level in the air of different urban locations of Chittagong, the second largest city of Bangladesh. Atmospheric pollutants like gaseous (SO2, NO2), particulate matters (SPM) were determined in Chittagong city. Eight different sampling stations, Agrabad (Badamtali Circle), New Market, Oxygen Circle, Muradpur, Nasirabad (2 No. Gate), Bahaddarhat, G.E.C Circle, A. K. Khan Circle were selected for sample collection and observations. PM10 and PM2.5 concentration were also measured at Continuous Air Monitoring Station (CAMS) in Chittagong and at the roof of Fire Service Station, Agrabad. From the results it has been found that the highest concentration value of SO2, NO2 and SPM was observed in highly traffic area at Oxygen Circle. The lowest concentration value was found at A. K. Khan Circle. The average results of gaseous pollutants and of particulate matters have been compared to national and international standards. It has been found that the value of SPM in the air of Chittagong city is higher than that of TLV value, recommended by WHO (World Health Organization), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, USA) and DoE (Department of Environment, Banagladesh) and it can be said that the air of Chittagong city is highly polluted. Like many other maga cities in the world the ambient air quality of Chittagong is also being deteriorated day by day. In order to mitigate air pollution in the city, a strategic air pollution management plan has been proposed and the possible different measures that could be adapted to maintain the balance between sustainable development and environmental management have been discussed
