Children as perpetrators and victims of traffic accidents in Poland in the years 2008–2015

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2016, Vol 22, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Traffic accidents involving children are a significant threat leading to injuries which cause disability, and are the cause of preventable deaths. Aim of the study. To investigate and evaluate the health impact of traffic accidents with the participation of the population aged 0–14 years in Poland in the years 2008–2015. Material and methods. An analysis of traffic accidents was performed in the age group 0–14 years, taking children as perpetrators and victims of these events. Accidents with injuries and fatal events among pedestrians, drivers and passengers were analyzed. Information about the cases was obtained from the annual reports of the Police Headquarters. Using Poisson regression trends in rates of children as perpetrators and victims of traffic accidents were analyzed. Results. In the years 2008–2015, in traffic accidents 44,609 children in the age group 0–14 years were injured, and 1,041 children were killed. Higher risk of injuries and deaths occurred in older children aged 7–14 years compared to younger children aged 0–6 years. Coefficients of the injured in accidents in a group of older child pedestrians were higher among victims (40.3/100 000) than among perpetrators (20.8/100,000), also the mortality rate was higher in casualties compared to the perpetrators, the highest death rate was found in passengers (1.0/100,000). There was a significant reduction in injured and mortality coefficients among the perpetrators (-10.8%/year and -12.5%/year) and the victims (-7.7%/year and -9.2%/year); wile the rate of the severity of accidents did not change significantly and amounted to an average of 2.4 deaths/100 accidents. Conclusions. Despite the decline in the rates of injured and mortality due to traffic accidents in children aged 0–14, active steps associated with increasing knowledge about the risk factors of accidents especially involving pedestrians should be taken.Key words: children, traffic accidents, deaths, pedestrians, passengers, inequalities in health
