Availability and restrictions in the use of biologic therapy in Poland

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2015, Vol 21, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Biopharmaceuticals are medical products extracted from biological sources or synthesized by genetic engineering. These promising substances are increasingly more commonly used worldwide. However, in Poland there are still many barriers hindering the popularization of biological treatment. Objective. The objective of the study is to the draw attention of medical circles to the current situation of biopharmaceuticals on the Polish pharmaceutical market, and to provoke thoughts concerning restrictions imposed by the financial situation in the national health care system. Results. The price of biopharmaceuticals is so high that they are not available for the average patient. At present, only 1% of the population in need use these medicines. Despite this, biologic drugs are rarely included in the lists of reimbursed drugs. Moreover, guidelines for the qualification and continuation of treatment does not always correspond to reality. The hope for improving this situation are biosimiliar products, but their use evokes much controversy, both ethical and medical. Conclusion. It is important that those who make decisions concerning availability and financing of biology treatment perceive that an effective treatment is the way to increase patients’ productivity. The lack of adequate treatment results in an increase in sick absenteeism, and the number of disabled who apply for due financial benefits. It should be remembered that biologic treatment is required not only by adults, but also by children. In the light of the current demographic decline, proper therapy is even more important, which would allow future activation of the youngest patients on the labour market.key words: biologic therapy, biosimiliars, rheumatology
