Abstract
The essay is an attempt to present the activity of Chinese missions, envoys and travelers during the XVII-XX Centuries, Centuries decisive for China’s contacts with countries of the West and their contribution to China’s integration into the international community. Due importance is given to the presence, beginning with the XVI-the Century, of the Jesuit missionaries and their part in introducing Chinese culture and civilization to European countries, in sponsoring visits of the first Chinese travelers, acting as envoys of the Chinese emperors and in initiating teaching and scientific study of Chinese language. Information are offered about the first Chinese travelers’ experience in France and other European countries and about their contribution to make Chinese language and culture known there and make Western culture and languages known in China. The essay highlights the most important events of the difficult and complex process of gradually understanding and accepting concepts and values of the Western world and of introducing modernization of China’s diplomatic activity: the first diplomatic mission of the Chinese Imperial Court in a Western country, in 1730; the visit in 11 countries of the first unofficial information gathering mission lead by Bin Chun, in 1866; the visit of the first official information gathering mission lead by Anson Burlingame and Zhi Gang in the United State of America and 10 European countries, in 1868-1870; the opening of the first diplomatic missions in France and Great Britain, in 1877; the 7 months constitution study mission in 10 countries lead by five dignitaries, in 1905. The essay offers information about the heroic deed of the first Chinese globe-trotter Pan Deming. He traveled around the world in seven years (1930-1937) in order to bring glory and international recognition to his motherland. Anna Eva Budura’s essay is the first attempt in the Romanian historiography to summerize all these knowledges and present them to the Romanian historians and to a large public intrested in the history of Chinese diplomacy .
