Clarifying the Relationship between Mental Disorders through the "Mental Level Table"

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 23

Abstract

Current diagnostic systems of mental disorders have some defects, such as the lack of logic in the order and many differences between categories. A foundational framework is needed to interconnect various mental disorders. The author puts forward the "mental level table" with two main points. Firstly, human mental activities are divided into five levels, namely, the neural level, the dynamic level, the emotional level, the cognitive level and the level of personality, psychology, and behavior. Secondly, for mental disorders with a pathological core at a specific level, symptoms may be at the same level, or it may project symptoms to more superficial levels. The author believes that this "mental level table" can identify the pathological core of each mental disorder, clarify the relationship between each other, and arrange mental disorders in a logical sequence.
