CLASSICAL CONCEPTS OF INNOVATIONS AND MODERNITY: EMPIRICAL CONFIRMATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

Abstract

Classical concepts of innovation contain the following basic assumptions: innovations are cyclical; the most important element of the innovation process is “creative destruction”; innovation activity is prone to clustering. Retrospective empirical studies confirm the validity of these provisions. Considering a significant increase in the speed and density of information interactions in modern society, there are grounds for assuming the acceleration of technological diffusion and a more even distribution of innovative benefits in the modern economic system in comparison with previous periods. The immanent properties of innovation allow us to identify the basic indicators of the economic activity of the enterprise, which are indicators of its innovative activity. The involvement in innovation activity is evidenced by: 1) spasmodic positive growth of economic indicators, accompanied by significant structural changes; 2) growth in labour productivity; 3) decrease in capital intensity; 4) reduction of unit costs; 5) growth of the economic added value index. Among the leading ways to monitor the level of innovation activity at the macro level, we consider it possible to single out a cluster analysis that allows us to identify “points of crystallization” of innovations with a subsequent study of the nature of their diffusion.
